Upcoming worship this summer
This summer we'll be exploring parables of the Reign of God - what Jesus variously called the Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of Heaven. For some of us, the language of "kingdom" can be off-putting - it feels hyper-masculine, authoritarian, a word that seems less to do with God's love than with amassing power and authority.
Perhaps that's the point, though. While the language of "kingdom" harkens back to an earlier day in Israelite history when they were a kingdom, there's a healthy dose of irony in Jesus' choice of words. Whatever God's "kingdom" is like has very little to do with the kingdoms of the world, particularly the Romans with their propensity towards coercion.
As we collectively face a world in which authoritarianism is on the rise, Jesus' words about the kingdom may be exactly what we need - a counternarrative about what it looks like to be a people.
