Musician-in-Residence

Central Presbyterian Church is hiring a Musician-in-Residence for a 10-month residency (Sept. 2022- June 2023) as we deepen and broaden our understanding of Black sacred musics through shared music making and engagement.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: A PERFORMER AND A TEACHER.

As a performer, you feel comfortable leading our congregation and our choir in singing, perhaps as a vocalist or keyboardist. You are comfortable as a soloist in a variety of styles, while we acknowledge no one is an expert in all things. We appreciate and celebrate unique talents and specific skill sets.

As a teacher, you have a passion for teaching the breadth and depth of Black sacred musics in a Christian setting, as specifically found in the Glory to God hymnal as well as other sources, both printed and oral. This includes spirituals and gospel, as well as non-idiomatic music of Black composers.

We want to create a position that matches your skills and passion. Possible ways that we might structure this position include:

  • If you love working with children, this position could include time in our Sunday School classes, teaching songs to children.

  • If you love lecture series, perhaps this position includes adult education and conversations.

  • If you are a composer, you might write a song for the congregation to learn

  • If you are a worship leader, perhaps you help us worship in new ways through music.

TIME COMMITMENT AND SALARY

  1. Participation in weekly Sunday morning worship and leadership on hymns when appropriate. About once per month, we feature your musical leadership in a more substantial way.

  2. An additional event each month, again based on what your passions and interests are. For example:

    • an Adult Education presentation following worship about decolonizing worship, or performance practices of specific Black sacred musics, or what reparations in hymnody looks like, etc.

    • two community sing events (held at times other than Sunday morning)

    • conversation with our youth about the intersection of social justice and music or current trends in pop music.

Weekly rehearsals in order to prepare for the larger events that include performing. When the choir is involved, this includes Wednesday night rehearsal from 7:15 – 9:00.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • $11,000 for the 10-month residency, paid biweekly.

  • There is an additional $6,000 budget for supporting this work (hiring of additional musicians, AV staff, etc.) This is to be spent in consultation with the Director of Music Ministries.

  • Six Sundays off during the residency
